Celebrating 20 YEARS of Edwards Surfacing

On 10 December 2025, Edwards Surfacing successfully completed a road resurfacing project on Newton Road in Stoke Hammond. Using our advanced Sumitomo asphalt paving machine, we laid a 35/14F Hot Rolled Asphalt (HRA) surface across the full 5.5-metre road width in a single continuous pass—resulting in a seamless finish with no longitudinal joints.
Due to site restrictions, our experienced team applied all 14 mm pre-coated chippings by hand, ensuring precision, safety, and a high-quality finish. The result is a smooth, durable surface that enhances safety and longevity for the local community.

Project Summary

Project Detail
Description
Location
Newton Road, Stoke Hammond (Buckinghamshire, UK)
Date Completed
10 December 2025
Materials Used
35/14F Hot Rolled Asphalt (HRA) with 14 mm pre-coated chippings
Equipment
Sumitomo asphalt paving machine; roller compactor
Width of Surfacing
5.5 metres (paved in one pass, no joints)
Special Considerations
Restricted residential site; manual chipping due to limited access

Technical Approach

Newton Road’s residential setting required careful planning to minimise disruption. Our team prepared the site and implemented traffic management before deploying the Sumitomo paver. This machine enabled us to lay the full 5.5 m width in a single pass, eliminating the need for a centre joint—improving both durability and appearance.
We used 35/14F HRA, a dense, high-performance asphalt mix known for its strength and smooth finish. The surface was finished with 14 mm granite chippings, pre-coated with bitumen, to enhance skid resistance and surface texture.

Manual Chipping for Precision

Due to space constraints, mechanical chipping was not feasible. Our team applied all chippings by hand, ensuring even coverage and precise placement. This method, though labour-intensive, was the safest and most effective solution for the site conditions.

Compaction and Finish

To complete the process, we used a roller compactor to embed the chippings and achieve a smooth, even finish. Multiple passes ensured optimal compaction, resulting in a joint-free, long-lasting surface that will serve the community well for years to come.
