Edwards Surfacing Delivers Again – Two Projects, One Week, Zero Compromise

High-Quality Surfacing Projects in Dudley and Stevenage Strengthen Key Partnerships

Last week, Edwards Surfacing completed two significant surfacing projects – one in Dudley and one in Stevenage – showcasing our technical excellence and the strength of our ongoing client partnerships. In Dudley (West Midlands), we finished a footpath and road surfacing job as part of an ongoing development with Excelsior Land Ltd, a repeat client for whom we’ve delivered several sites this year. In Stevenage (Hertfordshire), we completed a new courtyard surfacing for local residents in collaboration with Moores Ltd, continuing a successful partnership that has seen multiple similar projects this year and in previous years. Both projects were delivered to high standards of quality, using the right materials and techniques to ensure durability, while also highlighting the trust and cooperation we build with our clients through consistent results.

Dudley Footpath & Road Surfacing – Ongoing Excelsior Partnership

For our Excelsior Land Ltd project in Dudley, we completed surfacing for both a pedestrian footpath and an adjacent roadway within an ongoing development. This client is a long-term partner; in fact, we’ve worked on several of Excelsior’s sites throughout 2025, and this Dudley job is the latest example of our collaboration. Our familiarity with Excelsior’s projects and standards allowed us to plan and execute the work efficiently while maintaining top quality.

Technical details: The footpath was constructed using a two-layer asphalt approach to ensure longevity and safety for pedestrians. We laid a 60 mm layer of AC20 dense binder course as a stable base, then topped it with a 25 mm layer of AC6 close-graded surface course for a smooth, hard-wearing finish. These materials were selected to provide excellent load-bearing capacity in the base and a finely textured, skid-resistant surface on top. For the road section, our crew installed a robust 70 mm of AC20 binder course across the carriageway. This thick binder layer forms a durable foundation for the road and was compacted thoroughly to settle into the prepared base. (A surface wearing course will be applied on the road in a later phase, ensuring the final roadway can withstand heavy traffic.) By using high-quality asphalt mixes and proper installation techniques, we’ve ensured the new footpath and road in Dudley meet all relevant specifications and will serve the development reliably for years to come.

Quality and outcomes: Our experienced surfacing team carried out the works with careful attention to detail – from substrate preparation and edge taping to achieving the correct compaction and finish. The result is a neatly finished footpath that blends with the surroundings and a road base that is well-prepared for its final surfacing. The ongoing partnership with Excelsior meant communication on this project was seamless. We coordinated schedules and site access closely with Excelsior’s project managers, which helped us complete the job on time and to the client’s satisfaction. Each successful site we deliver for Excelsior reinforces our relationship. This Dudley project not only adds to Excelsior’s development progress but also exemplifies the trust they place in Edwards Surfacing to get the job done right.

Stevenage Courtyard Surfacing – Collaboration with Moores Ltd

The second project completed last week was a new courtyard surfacing in Stevenage, carried out for a local residential community. We partnered with Moores Ltd on this job – a contractor we’ve worked alongside on multiple projects both this year and in past years. The courtyard is part of a residential area where Moores is improving communal spaces, and they brought us in to deliver a high-quality paved surface. Having a strong working relationship with Moores meant we could swiftly mobilise our crew and integrate our surfacing work into the broader project timeline with minimal disruption to residents.

Technical details: Despite being a smaller-scale project, the courtyard received the same high-standard treatment as any major road. The design called for a durable yet smooth finish suitable for foot traffic and light vehicles (such as maintenance vans), so we applied a layered asphalt solution here as well. First, we laid down a 50 mm layer of AC20 binder course to serve as the foundation. This binder layer was critical for leveling the base and providing structural strength across the courtyard’s area. Next, we installed a 20 mm layer of AC6 surface course on top to give the courtyard a clean, fine-textured finish. The AC6 mix is ideal for this kind of shared surface – it uses smaller aggregate, which results in a smoother top that’s comfortable underfoot and aesthetically pleasing, while still being tough enough to resist wear. We completed the surfacing work in a single day (on Monday, 10th November 2025), thanks to efficient on-site coordination and favorable weather that allowed uninterrupted laying and compaction. The finished courtyard surface is evenly laid, well-compacted, and ready to be enjoyed by the residents.

Quality and outcomes: This project highlights our team’s ability to deliver quick turnaround without sacrificing quality. Every step, from applying the binder to the final rolling of the surface, was monitored for quality control. Edges were carefully tied in to existing pavement, and water drainage considerations were taken into account to avoid puddling on the new surface. The end result is a safe, attractive courtyard that will serve the community well. Working in partnership with Moores Ltd once again proved successful – our collaborative experience meant that site prep and scheduling were aligned perfectly. Over the years, Edwards Surfacing and Moores have developed an efficient workflow on jobs like this, and it showed: the project was completed on schedule and met all of Moores’ and the residents’ expectations. This continued cooperation with Moores not only benefits the local residents through improved amenities, but also reinforces the strong professional bond between our companies.

Both the Dudley and Stevenage projects demonstrate what Edwards Surfacing is all about: delivering top-notch surfacing solutions and building lasting partnerships. We take pride in using the right materials and methods for each job – whether it’s a large development roadway or a small community courtyard – to ensure a quality finish every time. Moreover, the trust that clients like Excelsior and Moores place in us by repeatedly involving our team in their projects speaks volumes about our consistency and reliability. We look forward to continuing these partnerships and taking on more projects that make use of our expertise, skill, and commitment to excellent service. Each completed job is not just a finished piece of pavement, but a testament to the collaborative effort and mutual trust between Edwards Surfacing and our valued clients
